Our Featured Artist for June is Jonathan Shearer

Our Featured Artist for June is Jonathan Shearer who isknown to many of you as a frequent tutor for our Gallery 'plein air' workshops. He lives in Alness in Easter Ross and has a studio base there and in Cromarty Arts Centre.  Jonathan graduated BA(Hons) Painting & Drawing from the School of Art ,Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen in 1993.

Jonathan's work focuses on many of Scotland's wild landscapes.  He visits and revisits particular places many times, where he walks, draws and paints out in the wilds.  He works repeatedly in these places to forge a deep and intimate connection with them.

He has given us some breathtaking pictures which are of a few of his chosen wild places – Torridon, Assynt and Balnakeil (all, incidentally, on the North Coast 500 Route) as well as Ardtoe in Ardnamurchan, and Glen Nevis.

Our other Gallery highlights this coming month are

  • more jewellery from award-winning jeweller, Eleanor Symms
  • re-stocked with Greg Dobson's popular metal fish and stags
  • Gallery mugs with three new designs
  • larger range of clothes from Jackie's Marigold Clothing
  • new work from artist Rhona Anderson, who is also now helping us to staff the Gallery
  • and lots of work from us and our regular exhibitors.

We hope to see you in June.  And please tell your friends too!

Best wishes

from Aileen, Cindie and Mairi.

Shieldaig Notes

What a glorious start to the summer!  No doubt there will be some consequences of experiencing such low rainfall but how lovely to have been warm and dry for the last 3 weeks.  The good weather seems to have kick-started the touring season and we've seen a big increase in the number of NC500'ers passing through the village.  I'ts become something of a car-spotter's paradise with cars ranging from a fleet of modest Fiats to a rather less modest fleet of Ferrari's that were colourful diversion for the afternoon they were in town.  No news on our sea eagles yet but lambing season seems to have been a success, despite a chilly first week the lambs have enjoyed a good few weeks of growing conditions and are now beginning to range a bit further afield and get out & about to make the most of the spring growth.  If you keep your eyes open as you walk along the point you'll see lots of violets, primroses, lousewort, sorrel, bluebells and lots of new-growth bracken.  The birds are tweeting, the cuckoos calling and it's lovely to see the swallows back.  Fingers crossed this is an early sign of good things to come....

Bealach Beag Cycle Sportive – Saturday 6th May 2017

The 43-mile Bealach Beag sportive takes place on Saturday 6th May.
Riders will leave Sheildaig between 10:30 and 11:00, following a route straight towards Tornapress, over the Bealach-na-Ba to Applecross and around the peninsula back to a finish in Sheildaig.

A road closure will be in place over the Bealach from 10.30 to 13.30.  The Applecross peninsula road remains open throughout.

We are extremely grateful to all the local communities in which we host our sportives throughout the year.  Without the support and involvement of the community the event would not be possible.
