Kishorn Port Ltd – Serving the energy industry since 1975

Kishorn Port Ltd (KPL) is the joint venture company regenerating the oil and gas construction yard, dry dock and marine facilities at Kishorn, on the west coast of Scotland. The sheltered deep-water access channel of Loch Kishorn, together with a unique 160m diameter dry dock with up to 13.8m of water makes it ideal for engagement with the oil and gas, renewables and decommissioning sectors. KPL recently secured its first major contract to deep anchor and provided support services to Diamond Offshores’ Ocean GreatWhite rig.

The original Kishorn Yard was developed in the 1970’s. The yard, then owned by Howard Doris Ltd, operated from 1975 to 1987. In 1975 work began on the north side of Loch Kishorn to develop a substantial acreage in order to build the famous Ninian Central Platform, which is still operating to this day. This was by far the largest project undertaken at the site and necessitated the construction of the 160m diameter Dry Dock to house the first layer of the Ninian Central Platform as it was ‘set-down’ as a concrete structure.

By 1977, there were over 3,000 plus people working on site. Throughout the 1980’s a number of smaller projects took place on site including the Re-Commissioning of the Buchan Alpha. However in 1986, Howard Doris Ltd filed for bankruptcy and consequently the site lay dormant until 1992 when the Dry Dock was briefly reopened to enable the caissons for the Skye Bridge to be manufactured.

KPL (Kishorn Port Ltd) formed in 2008 as a joint venture between Ferguson Transport & Shipping and Leiths (Scotland) Ltd, to work closely with the energy industries and local communities, with the objective of regenerating the site and bringing the dry dock back into full use. The two companies transfer their skills into the energy sectors through the quarrying, concrete and construction materials expertise of Leiths and with the offshore marine port services and operations, shipping, and stevedoring and transport logistic skills of Ferguson Transport & Shipping.

Between 2017 and 2018 the site was regenerated with a range of works being carried out including the installation of a major pumping system to ensure the speedy dewatering of the dry dock, cathodic protection to the sheet piled structures at the dock, along with the installation of fendering to protect the huge flooding tubes from accidental impact. A concrete access ramp was blasted into the side of the dry dock to ensure easy access from HGV vehicles and cranes.

The concrete caisson gates which were cast in the mid 1970’s to enable the construction of super-sized oil production platforms also underwent  minor repair works and a new set of modified gate seals were manufactured.

Over 40 years after the Ninian Central was towed out of Kishorn in January 2019, KPL released images of the sites first major contract, another giant of the oil and gas industry. The Ocean GreatWhite, the largest semi-submersible offshore drilling rig in the world, owned by Diamond Offshore, a global offshore drilling contractor. The Ocean Great White is a 6th Generation Harsh Environment drilling rig capable of drilling down to 10,000m in 3,000m of water. The rig requires deep water for anchoring and Loch Kishorn provides the ideal sheltered conditions.

Throughout the stay at Kishorn Port & Dry Dock the site will accommodate the needs of the Ocean GreatWhite by providing a supply base. The Dry Dock will be utilised for storage of components and materials that will be required whilst the rig is stationed at Kishorn as well as preparing it for its onward journey.

Whilst the OGW will not be drilling at Kishorn, during its station it will be made ready for its drilling programme with Ferguson Transport & Shipping assisting with offshore marine port services, marine agency, stevedoring support and supply chain management.
