LOCHCARRON CHURCHES

The first Presbyterian minister came to Lochcarron in 1726 and established his church near the old churchyard, then building the now ruined church.

Later generations built the East Church, a landmark at the entrance to the village. Subsequently there were various divisions so that currently we have: -

  • The Church of Scotland (1910) [Minister Rev. G. Martin]
  • The Free Presbyterian Church (1908)
  • The Free Church with it attractive new church and manse which sits alongside the old church.
  • The Associated Free Presbyterian Church currently conducts its services in the village hall.

Each of the above congregations meets on Sundays and details of the services are available on their noticeboards.

Nearby services are also held in: -

  • The Episcopalian Church at Kishorn, which was built 100 years ago as a private chapel for Courthill House.
  • Catholic worship is conducted in Dornie.
  • The Church of Scotland in Applecross.
  • The Free Presbyterian Church in Shieldaig.

CHURCHYARDS

Our churchyards are very interesting and historic and reading the old grave headstone can be fascinating. The old churchyards are also associated with the saints e.g. St Donan at Kishorn and St Maelruba at Applecross.
